Deadly fire forces evacuation of 1,700 tourists at Dominican Republic beach resort
A massive fire tore through a popular beachfront resort in the Dominican Republic, killing one tourist, injuring several others, and forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests and staff, authorities confirmed.
The blaze erupted on Friday at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach, a well-known all-inclusive resort located in the Caribbean beach destination of Bayahibe. Emergency crews battled the flames for hours before bringing the fire under control. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.
Emergency officials identified the victim as Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian tourist. Three people were transported to medical facilities for treatment, while six others received medical assistance at the scene, according to emergency services.
Videos shared by local media showed thick black smoke rising over the Caribbean coastline as flames engulfed sections of the resort. Preliminary assessments indicate that the fire spread quickly due to strong winds and the presence of highly flammable palm-thatched roofing materials used in parts of the complex.
Authorities mobilized an extensive emergency response involving firefighters, civil defense personnel, police units, and medical teams. More than a dozen firefighting units were deployed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.
As a precaution, approximately 1,700 tourists and staff members were evacuated from the resort. Many guests were relocated to nearby hotels and temporary accommodations while authorities assessed the extent of the damage. The neighboring Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, which is part of the same resort complex, was not affected by the fire and remains operational.
Officials stated that tourist activities in Bayahibe and surrounding areas continue as normal despite the incident, emphasizing that the fire was confined to the affected resort.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigators from local authorities and emergency agencies have begun examining the scene. Officials are expected to conduct technical assessments in the coming days to determine how the blaze started and whether additional safety measures may be required.
The tragedy has drawn international attention to fire safety at tourist resorts, particularly those featuring traditional thatched-roof structures that can accelerate the spread of flames under windy conditions.
The Dominican Republic remains the Caribbean's most visited tourist destination, welcoming approximately 5.6 million visitors during the first five months of 2026 alone. Authorities have pledged a full investigation as the tourism industry seeks to reassure travelers following one of the country's most serious resort fires in recent years. (ILKHA)
