Drone strike targets prime minister’s office in Iraq’s Kurdistan region
The office of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the head of the region’s security and intelligence agency were targeted in a drone attack early Monday, according to the KRG’s security authorities.
The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service said two Hadid-110 drones targeted the prime minister’s private office and the residence of the head of the Security Directorate.
The agency said the drones were launched from Iranian territory, but did not clarify whether they struck their intended targets. It confirmed that no casualties were reported in the incident.
The attack was reported by Iraq’s state news agency, which cited a statement from the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service.
KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the drone attack as “illegitimate and unacceptable.”
“This is a dangerous step and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region,” Barzani said in a post on X.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing security concerns across Iraq and the wider Middle East.
Iran and Iranian-aligned armed groups have repeatedly accused the KRG of allowing Iranian Kurdish opposition groups to operate from Iraqi Kurdistan.
Tehran considers several of these groups a security threat and has previously carried out strikes against what it describes as opposition-group positions in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.
Kurdish authorities in Iraq, however, have consistently denied allowing their territory to be used as a base for attacks or other hostile activities against neighboring countries.
The latest drone attack is likely to further raise tensions between the KRG and Tehran, while also adding to security concerns in a region already affected by the broader escalation involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
Iraqi federal authorities have yet to announce further details about the incident or identify those responsible beyond the KRG security agency’s allegation regarding the launch point. (ILKHA)
