European Council to hold emergency summit over Greenland tensions
The European Council has announced plans to convene an extraordinary EU summit to address escalating tensions surrounding Greenland, amid concerns over recent moves by the United States.
European Council President António Costa said the decision was taken in response to developments linked to Washington’s plans regarding Greenland, stressing the need for enhanced coordination among EU member states.
“Given the significance of recent events and the necessity to strengthen coordination, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days,” Costa said in a statement.
Costa noted that consultations had already taken place with EU member states regarding the growing tensions around Greenland. He emphasized that the bloc reaffirmed its strong commitment to respect for international law, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty, while also underscoring unity and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland.
According to Costa, EU members also reiterated the importance of recognizing shared transatlantic interests, particularly within NATO, in maintaining peace and security in the Arctic region.
Addressing trade-related tensions, Costa said EU member states are in agreement that tariffs imposed by the United States undermine transatlantic relations and are incompatible with existing EU-US trade frameworks. He added that the bloc is prepared to defend itself against “any form of pressure.”
At the same time, Costa stressed that the European Union remains ready to continue constructive cooperation with the United States on all matters of mutual interest.
The announcement comes after US President Donald Trump said on Saturday via the social media platform Truth Social that Washington would impose a 10 percent customs tariff, starting February 1, on all goods exported to the United States from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, citing developments related to Greenland.
