At least five people were killed and several others injured after unidentified gunmen attacked a mining site in Nigeria's Plateau State, according to local media reports.

The attack took place in Marit village in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where armed assailants opened fire on miners working at the site before fleeing the area.

Local authorities said five miners were killed in the attack, while several others sustained injuries. The wounded were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Security personnel were deployed to the area following the attack, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Plateau State has witnessed a series of deadly attacks in recent months. On September 21, nine people were killed in separate assaults carried out by armed gangs in the state.

Nigeria has long struggled with insecurity in several parts of the country, where armed gangs frequently carry out attacks, kidnappings and killings.

Plateau State has also experienced recurring violence linked to criminal groups and communal conflicts, posing persistent security challenges for local communities.(ILKHA)
