Floods in Greece kill one, force evacuations after heavy rainfall
Severe rainfall in Greece has caused widespread flooding, leaving one person dead on Rhodes Island and forcing the evacuation of the Makrikapa area on Evia Island due to rising floodwaters.
The Greek Civil Protection General Secretariat issued a red alert for seven regions as adverse weather conditions and heavy rainfall affected large parts of the country.
The warning covered Attica, including the capital Athens, Evia Island and surrounding areas, the Northern Aegean Islands, the Southern Aegean Region, the Sporades Islands, Crete and the Peloponnese Peninsula.
Authorities urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel and follow official warnings due to the risk of flooding and dangerous weather conditions.
Floodwaters disrupt daily life
On Evia Island, the overflowing of the Kirea Stream following intense rainfall led authorities to evacuate the Makrikapa area.
Flooding affected many parts of the country, particularly Rhodes Island, where homes and businesses were inundated and vehicles were left trapped in floodwaters.
Several roads were closed due to the flooding, while education was suspended on Evia Island, the Sporades Islands and in parts of the Southern Aegean region.
Maritime transport was also disrupted, with services suspended at several locations, including Piraeus Port.
Young man found dead on Rhodes
Local media reported that the body of a man in his 20s was found beneath debris and reeds carried by floodwaters in the Stegna area of Rhodes.
Authorities believe the victim was among young people travelling in one of four vehicles that were swept away by floodwaters and dragged toward the sea.
Emergency teams continued operations in affected areas as authorities monitored the situation and warned residents about continuing risks from heavy rainfall and flash floods.(ILKHA)
