Hamas calls for mass mobilization to Al-Aqsa Mosque as Israeli forces reopen site after 40-day closure
The Hamas movement has called on Palestinians in Occupied Jerusalem and within the Green Line to mobilize and head to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, urging them to revive and maintain a constant presence there following its reopening by Israeli authorities after more than forty days of closure.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Hamas declared that Friday should serve as a day to renew commitment and loyalty to Occupied Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, strengthen Palestinian presence, and protect the holy site. The movement urged the public to remain, as they have always been, "a protective shield and a solid barrier" against Israeli attempts to take exclusive control over the site and impose new Judaization realities.
Hamas emphasized that the Al-Aqsa Mosque will remain at the center of the conflict and a sacred trust carried by both the Palestinian people and the wider Muslim nation. The group reaffirmed its commitment to sacrifice "everything necessary" until the site is liberated and cleansed from occupation.
Meanwhile, Haroun Nasser al-Din, a member of Hamas’s political bureau and head of its Jerusalem affairs office, warned that Israeli plans to link settlements in Occupied Jerusalem represent a serious escalation in efforts to impose new realities on the ground. He said these plans aim to fragment Occupied Jerusalem and isolate it from its surrounding areas.
In a statement on Thursday, al-Din explained that the ongoing confiscation of land in areas such as Abu Dis, al-Eizariya, and Khan al-Ahmar reflects a continued policy of displacement and spatial cleansing against Palestinians.
He stressed that these projects will not change the identity or history of Occupied Jerusalem, nor the Palestinian people’s established rights to it, asserting that all attempts to alter its character will ultimately fail.
The Hamas official added that Palestinians "will not stand idle" in the face of these actions, calling for a comprehensive escalation of all forms of resistance and for unified national efforts to protect land and holy sites.
Israeli forces reopened the Al-Aqsa Mosque early Thursday after it had been closed for forty days, citing security concerns during the Israeli-American escalation against Iran. The prolonged closure had heightened tensions across the occupied territories, with Palestinian religious and political leaders repeatedly demanding immediate access to the third-holiest site in Islam.
As of Friday morning, large crowds were reportedly beginning to gather in the vicinity of the Old City, with Palestinian authorities calling for a day of mass prayer and presence at the mosque compound. (ILKHA)
