HAMAS confirms commitment to second phase of ceasefire talks
HAMAS Spokesperson Hazem Qassem stated that the movement is serious about cooperating with mediators to advance to the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.
Qassem emphasized that the presence of the HAMAS delegation in Cairo demonstrates the organization’s determination to move forward with the next stage of the truce. He described the paths to the second phase as complex but reiterated that HAMAS has fulfilled its obligations despite violations and attacks by the occupying forces.
He also warned that ongoing violations could undermine the ceasefire agreement and noted that the mediators in Cairo have been clearly informed of these concerns.
Regarding the role of international powers, Qassem stressed that their responsibility is to protect vulnerable civilians and ensure accountability for the occupying forces’ continued aggression. He further highlighted that violations continue every day in Gaza.
A senior HAMAS delegation is in Cairo to discuss arrangements for implementing the second phase of the ceasefire with Egyptian officials. According to HAMAS leadership, the delegation, headed by Khalil al-Hayya, is addressing ongoing violations and breaches of the agreement by the occupation forces.
The discussions also aim to prepare for the commencement of negotiations on the second phase of the ceasefire, which came into effect on October 10. Since the ceasefire was agreed upon, occupation forces have committed hundreds of violations, resulting in hundreds of casualties.
The ceasefire agreement was intended to end the war of occupation that has caused tens of thousands of deaths, hundreds of thousands of injuries, and severe destruction to civilian infrastructure in Gaza since October 7, 2023.(ILKHA)
