Indian naval forces have rescued an Iranian fishing boat and its 20 crew members after they were hijacked by suspected Somali pirates, following an operation lasting more than 48 hours, India's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.
The rescue of the vessel, identified as the Azini, was completed on Monday in the Arabian Sea, more than 3,000 kilometres (1,865 miles) from Mumbai, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said.
An official from the Puntland Maritime Police Force told The Associated Press that Indian forces disarmed 12 suspected Somali pirates, confiscated their mobile phones and subsequently released them.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly.
The operation highlights India's continued naval presence in waters off Somalia and across the Arabian Sea, where piracy and attacks on commercial and fishing vessels have raised security concerns. (ILKHA)
