US court temporarily blocks Trump administration plan to deport Afghan migrants via Pakistan
A federal court in the United States has temporarily blocked the Trump administration's plan to transfer a group of Afghan migrants through Pakistan to Afghanistan, suspending the proposed deportations until Saturday.
US media reported that US District Judge Valerie Caproni in New York issued the order on November 3, putting the administration's plan on hold while the legal proceedings continue.
AfghanEvac, an organisation supporting Afghans seeking resettlement in the United States, also announced that the flight scheduled to transfer the migrants had been postponed. However, the organisation stressed that the court's decision did not amount to a permanent cancellation of the deportation plan.
According to AfghanEvac and Human Rights First, more than 80 detained Afghans have contacted the organisations, expressing fears that they could be deported to Afghanistan.
The proposed transfer has raised concerns among migrant advocacy groups, particularly over the potential risks faced by Afghans who previously worked with US forces, government institutions or international organisations.
The temporary court order prevents the administration from proceeding with the transfer until Saturday, but the migrants' longer-term status remains uncertain. Further legal proceedings could determine whether the plan can move forward or whether additional restrictions will be imposed. (ILKHA)
