In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Maldives have officially announced the restoration of their diplomatic relations.
The announcement comes following a significant meeting that took place on Friday, September 22, 2023, between Amir-Abdollahian, Foreign Minister of Iran, and Ahmed Khaleel, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives. This meeting occurred on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly.
In their joint statement, Iran and the Maldives expressed their commitment to rebuilding diplomatic relations, emphasizing that this decision is aligned with the interests and aspirations of their respective peoples.
The two governments have underlined the importance of nurturing friendly relations founded on principles of mutual respect for sovereignty, equality, mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.
Furthermore, both nations have outlined their intent to enhance cooperation across various domains, encompassing investment, trade, facilitation of travel and people-to-people connections, as well as collaboration in the fields of science and technological innovation.
