Iran’s air defense forces have intercepted and destroyed an advanced Orbiter reconnaissance drone over the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian Army said Sunday, in the latest reported confrontation involving an American unmanned aircraft and Iran’s integrated air defense network.

According to the Army’s public relations office, the drone was detected and targeted at around 6:30 p.m. local time by Iranian air defense units deployed in southeastern Iran. The operation was carried out using domestically developed air defense systems operating as part of Iran’s integrated air defense network.

The Army said the drone was destroyed while conducting a reconnaissance mission over the maritime area of the strategic waterway.

The reported interception underscores the growing importance of Iran’s indigenous air defense capabilities as tensions continue to escalate around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Indian Ocean.
