The year 2025 has officially become the bloodiest year for the media since tracking began over three decades ago, driven largely by what advocates describe as a systematic campaign by Israel to silence Palestinian voices.
According to a harrowing new report from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a record 129 journalists and media workers were martyred last year. For the second year in a row, Israel was found responsible for two-thirds of all press killings globally, solidifying its military's reputation as the deadliest force for journalists in modern history.
A Targeted Campaign of Silence
The report sheds light on the unprecedented dangers faced by Palestinian reporters who remain the world's primary window into the catastrophe in Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has now committed more targeted killings of journalists than any other military documented by the CPJ since 1992.
While conflicts in Ukraine and Sudan also claimed lives, the overwhelming majority of victims were Palestinians killed by Israeli fire. Rights groups argue that these are not accidental deaths of war, but a deliberate attempt to blind the international community by eliminating those documenting the reality on the ground.
"Death from Above": The Rise of Drone Assassinations
A terrifying hallmark of 2025 was the surge in drone-assisted killings. The number of journalists killed by drones skyrocketed from just two in 2023 to 39 in 2025.
The vast majority of these high-tech assassinations were carried out by the Israeli military. Palestinian journalists have reported being tracked by surveillance drones for hours before being struck, even while wearing clearly marked "PRESS" vests and helmets.
Total Impunity for Killers
Despite the mountain of evidence documenting targeted assassinations, the report highlights a total collapse of international accountability. Not a single Israeli official or soldier has been held responsible for the record-breaking slaughter of media workers in 2025.
The CPJ noted a complete absence of transparent investigations, leaving the families of Palestinian journalists without justice and the survivors in constant peril. As Israel continues to bar international media from entering Gaza independently, the local Palestinian press remains the only line of defense against the erasure of the truth—and they are paying for that courage with their lives.
