Lavrov says Russia could approve transfer of Türkiye’s S-400s to friendly third country
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow could approve the transfer of Türkiye's S-400 air defence missile systems to a "friendly third country," provided an official request is submitted and the recipient maintains friendly relations with Russia.
Speaking during a press conference on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Lavrov said no official request regarding such a transfer has been received by Moscow so far.
According to Russia's state-run TASS news agency, Lavrov said the transfer would only be possible with Russia's consent under the terms of the end-user agreement signed when the systems were delivered.
No official request received
Lavrov said Russia would be prepared to consider approving a transfer if the recipient country maintained friendly relations with Moscow and provided assurances that the missile systems would not be transferred to another country.
Türkiye took delivery of the Russian-made S-400 air defence systems in 2019, a move that became a major obstacle to its participation in the US-led F-35 fighter jet programme and resulted in CAATSA sanctions being imposed by Washington.
In recent months, reports have indicated that Ankara and Washington have been exploring possible solutions to the S-400 issue. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also said on September 19 that the two sides were working on "creative ideas" aimed at resolving the dispute through mutual goodwill.(ILKHA)
