Lithuania extends airspace restrictions along Belarus border until 2027
Lithuania has extended airspace restrictions along its border with Belarus until January 1, 2027, in an effort to strengthen the protection of its airspace and enable the military to respond swiftly to potential violations.
The decision extends the existing restricted airspace zones along the Belarusian border for another six months. The measure is intended to enhance airspace security and support the armed forces' ability to react promptly to possible incursions.
According to a statement by Lithuania's Ministry of Transport and Communications, the restricted airspace zones, which had been due to expire on July 1, will remain in force in line with the operational needs of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to ensure effective monitoring, control and defence of the country's airspace.
Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications Juras Taminskas said the geopolitical situation in the region remains tense, adding that hybrid threats originating from Belarus and recent unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) incidents in Lithuania and neighbouring countries demonstrate that security risks persist.
Taminskas said the extension of the restricted airspace zones along the Belarusian border is necessary to safeguard the country's airspace.
"We must remain prepared for any violation of our airspace. We are continuing all necessary measures to protect our airspace and ensure the armed forces can respond without delay," he said.
Flights will remain prohibited within the designated restricted zones along the Belarusian border, with exceptions granted only in accordance with procedures approved by the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
The decision, adopted at the request of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, aims to ensure an appropriate response to potential airspace violations while strengthening the surveillance, control and defence of the country's airspace.(ILKHA)
