Nine dead, dozens injured in Russia's missile and drone attacks on Ukraine
Ukraine has sustained one of the largest and most coordinated Russian assaults in recent months, involving an overwhelming barrage of 48 missiles and over 470 drones, as reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
The widespread strikes have resulted in at least nine confirmed deaths and dozens of injuries across the country.
The primary targets of the extensive offensive were critical infrastructure and densely populated civilian areas. Initial assessments indicate severe damage to energy, transport, and civilian facilities, threatening to disrupt essential services and worsen the humanitarian situation.
The regions that bore the brunt of the assault, as specified by President Zelenskiy, included the hardest-hit areas of Kharkiv, Lviv, Donetsk, and Ivano-Frankivsk. Significant attacks were also experienced in Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, and Dnipropetrovsk.
Footage circulating on social media and reports from local media outlets show rescue teams battling smoke and debris in numerous affected communities, including the city of Lviv.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized that the strikes have a dual purpose: not only to disrupt essential critical infrastructure but also to pose a "continuing threat to civilian life," which he warned is further escalating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Emergency services are currently on the ground, working tirelessly to assess the full extent of the damage and provide immediate aid to the affected communities.
Authorities have issued urgent warnings, urging residents across Ukraine to remain highly vigilant as the situation is dynamic and continues to develop. The true scale of the casualties and destruction is still being determined. (ILKHA)
