Palestine PM calls on US to cancel plan for a new embassy in Jerusalem
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh on Monday called on the Biden administration to cancel plan for a new US embassy in Jerusalem on usurped Palestinian land.
Shtayyeh stressed that the land on which the complex will be built is usurped Palestinian-owned land illegally seized under the israeli "Absentee Property Law" of 1950.
Speaking at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting held in Ramallah, Shtayyeh welcomed the vote at the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the “Special Political and Decolonization Committee”, in favor of four resolutions of the State of Palestine, which will be adopted later in the General Assembly, affirming the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost of which is their right to self-determination, the establishment of an independent state on the lines of June 4, 1967, the right of refugees to return to their homes in accordance with Resolution 194, the rejection of settlements as illegal, and the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) for three more years.
Shtayyeh also welcomed the committee’s adoption of Palestine’s decision to request a legal advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the nature of the existence of the Israeli colonial occupation on the land of the State of Palestine, including Jerusalem, thanking the countries that sponsored and voted for the resolution, while calling on the countries that did not support the resolution to reconsider their positions, abide by the international law, and not stand on the wrong side of history because this encourages the Israeli occupation and colonialism and does not support peace and stability in the region and the world.
He indicated that the occupation army continues its violations against the Palestinian people through its incursions into the cities, the latest of which was the storming this morning of the town of Beitunia, near Ramallah, during which a 15-year-old girl was killed and another person was injured.
