Palestinian imam released in US after three months in ICE detention
A Palestinian-American imam who was detained by US immigration authorities in March has been released after nearly three months in custody, following a federal court ruling that raised concerns he may have been targeted for his pro-Palestinian views.
Salah Sarsour, imam of the largest mosque affiliated with the Islamic Society of Milwaukee in the US state of Wisconsin, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on March 30.
His release came after a federal judge found that Sarsour had presented a credible case suggesting he may have been subjected to government action for exercising his right to free speech.
US District Judge James Patrick Hanlon said government lawyers had failed to provide sufficient evidence to support claims that Sarsour posed an immediate threat. Court records also indicated that Sarsour has lived legally in the United States for more than three decades.
Under the court's order, Sarsour will remain free while legal proceedings continue, although he is required to stay within the state of Wisconsin.
The Islamic Society of Milwaukee has maintained that Sarsour was targeted because of his public support for the Palestinian cause and his advocacy on issues related to Palestine.
Speaking after his release, Sarsour expressed gratitude for being reunited with his family and said he would continue to speak out in support of Palestine and human rights.
The case has drawn attention amid broader debate in the United States over government policies toward pro-Palestinian activists. Critics argue that such measures restrict freedom of expression, while officials insist that their actions are motivated by security concerns.(ILKHA)
