Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails cut off from outside world for 1,000 days
The Palestinian Commission of Detainees' and Ex-Detainees' Affairs said Palestinians held in Israeli occupation prisons have been denied contact with the outside world for 1,000 consecutive days, while the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been prevented from visiting detainees during the same period.
In a statement, the commission said the prolonged isolation has deprived prisoners of regular contact with their families and legal representatives, while preventing independent international monitoring of detention conditions.
The commission described the continued suspension of ICRC visits as a serious obstacle to documenting prison conditions and assessing allegations of human rights violations inside Israeli occupation prisons.
Reports allege worsening treatment inside prisons
A report released in July 2026 by the Palestinian Prisoners Media Office said conditions inside Israeli occupation prisons have deteriorated significantly, alleging widespread torture, food deprivation, medical negligence, prolonged solitary confinement and other forms of mistreatment.
According to the report, these practices have intensified since the start of the Gaza war, as the number of Palestinians detained by Israeli forces has risen sharply.
Palestinian institutions argue that restrictions imposed on detainees extend beyond communication with families, affecting access to healthcare, legal assistance and other basic rights guaranteed under international humanitarian law.
Prison population reaches 9,400
According to data released by the Palestinian Prisoners Media Office, approximately 9,400 Palestinians are currently being held in Israeli occupation prisons.
The total includes 94 women, 350 children, 3,244 administrative detainees held without formal charges or trial, and 1,320 people classified by Israeli authorities as "unlawful combatants."
The report also said that more than 24,600 Palestinians have been arrested across Gaza, the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem since the escalation of the conflict.
Calls for international intervention
Palestinian organizations said preventing ICRC access has made it difficult for independent observers to verify conditions inside Israeli occupation prisons, particularly amid allegations of torture, inadequate medical treatment and prolonged isolation.
They called on international organizations to intervene to ensure detainees receive protection under international law and to restore regular humanitarian visits to detention facilities.
The issue of Palestinian prisoners remains one of the most contentious aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Palestinian institutions describing the 1,000-day isolation period as evidence of systematic violations of prisoners' fundamental rights and calling for greater international scrutiny.(ILKHA)
