Poland revokes Zelenskyy's highest state honor, drawing sharp response from Kyiv
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has revoked the Order of the White Eagle, the country's highest state distinction, previously awarded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a move that has triggered a sharp response from Kyiv and exposed lingering historical tensions between the two allies.
According to Polish officials, the decision was prompted by Zelenskyy's reference to a military formation using the name of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a group that remains deeply controversial in Poland due to its alleged involvement in the massacre of Polish civilians during World War II.
Nawrocki said historical truth could not be subject to political compromise, adding that Warsaw had repeatedly urged Kyiv to reconsider the use of the designation but had received no response.

The decision has also sparked debate within Poland. Reports indicated that Prime Minister Donald Tusk opposed the move and warned against actions that could deepen divisions between the two neighboring countries at a time of continued regional instability.
Kyiv calls the move a "strategic mistake"
Ukraine reacted strongly to the announcement. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the decision as a "strategic mistake," arguing that it would only benefit Russia by undermining unity between Warsaw and Kyiv.
Sybiha also announced that he would return a Polish state decoration previously awarded to him in protest against the decision.
Poland has been among Ukraine's strongest supporters since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, providing military, humanitarian and political assistance while hosting millions of Ukrainian refugees. Despite their close cooperation, disputes over historical events dating back to World War II have periodically strained relations between the two countries.
Analysts said the latest dispute highlights the continuing challenge of balancing strategic cooperation against Russia with unresolved historical grievances that remain sensitive in both Poland and Ukraine.(ILKHA)
