Serbia: Eight dead in Belgrade nursing home fire

A tragic fire at a nursing home in the Barajevo suburb of Belgrade claimed the lives of eight people early Monday morning, with authorities suspecting criminal activity as a potential cause.
Nemanja Starovic, Serbia's Minister for Labor, Employment, Veterans, and Social Affairs, confirmed the fatalities and noted the swift response of emergency services. "Emergency services reacted quickly and efficiently, but the fire had already spread extensively. Unfortunately, eight lives were lost," Starovic said.
Thirteen residents were safely evacuated from the building, while seven others sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest the possibility of foul play. "Initial findings point to a criminal act. The investigation is ongoing, and I expect the prosecution to provide official information later today," Starovic added.
The fire broke out at approximately 3:30 a.m. (0230 GMT), with media reports indicating that around 30 residents were present in the facility at the time. Firefighters extinguished the blaze after deploying numerous personnel and vehicles, while emergency medical teams administered on-site care to survivors.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, as the nation mourns the loss of lives in this devastating incident. (ILKHA)
