Somalia condemns Israeli ambassador appointment to Somaliland
Somalia has reiterated that its sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable, rejecting any external attempts to influence its internal affairs, particularly regarding the Somaliland region and broader regional security developments.
Somali Foreign Minister Ali Mohamed Omar stated that the country is firmly opposed to any foreign involvement that challenges Somalia’s unity, stressing that national sovereignty cannot be subject to negotiation or external discretion.
Omar specifically addressed recent reports concerning efforts by the “Israeli regime” to establish diplomatic presence or engagement in Somaliland, warning that such moves violate Somalia’s sovereignty and international law.
“Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are not subject to negotiation. No external power can, under any justification, treat any part of our country as a separate entity,” he said.
He emphasized that Somalia’s response is not emotional or reactionary, but grounded in international law and diplomatic engagement.
The foreign minister underlined that Somalia continues to address disputes through legal and diplomatic channels rather than escalation.
“We approach issues not through tension, but through international law and multilateral diplomacy,” he said, adding that Somalia remains committed to stability in the region.
Commenting on broader regional tensions, Omar said Somalia opposes any escalation that could endanger civilians or destabilize the Horn of Africa.
“Our position is principled. We oppose escalation, civilian harm, and any action that deepens regional instability,” he stated.
Somalia also reaffirmed its position on the security of key maritime routes, including the Bab el-Mandeb corridor, describing them as vital arteries for global trade.“All international sea lanes must remain open, secure, and uninterrupted. These routes are not only vital for Somalia but for global commerce,” Omar said.
Addressing foreign military deployments and agreements, the minister stressed that any such arrangements are only valid with the approval of the Somali government and in line with national interests.
“No political, military, or strategic presence in Somalia is legitimate without government authorization. Sovereignty cannot be transferred or leased,” he said.
Omar’s remarks reflect a more assertive Somali position amid increasing regional competition and disputes over influence in the Horn of Africa, particularly concerning Somaliland and strategic maritime corridors.
The statement underscores Mogadishu’s insistence on exclusive sovereignty and its rejection of unilateral external involvement in its internal affairs. (ILKHA)
