Sweden will support Finland's airspace surveillance and territorial defence with Gripen fighter jets under expanding defence cooperation between the two Nordic NATO allies, Finnish authorities announced.

In a statement, the Finnish Defence Forces said Sweden's contribution, which will include Gripen fighter aircraft and a corvette-class warship, is expected to continue at least until the end of 2026.

"The capabilities provided by Sweden will strengthen air surveillance in particular, allowing the Finnish Defence Forces to free up their own resources to respond to airspace violations and other incidents when necessary," the statement said.

Sweden responds to Finland's security request

Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson told Reuters that Finland had requested additional air defence support in response to the deteriorating regional security environment, and Sweden had agreed to provide assistance.

Jonson said the agreement would also allow the Swedish Armed Forces, when necessary, to help respond to violations of Finland's airspace and territory.

Broader military support

Sweden's contribution could include not only fighter aircraft but also warships capable of countering aircraft and drones, as well as ground-based counter-drone systems, according to the Finnish Defence Forces.

The move reflects growing military cooperation between Sweden and Finland following their accession to NATO, as both countries continue to strengthen regional defence and deterrence capabilities in Northern Europe.(ILKHA)
