Three people were killed and 17 others injured on Thursday after a fire broke out following the explosion of a helium cylinder at Arabella Plaza Mall in New Cairo, Egyptian authorities said.
Egypt’s Ministry of Interior rejected reports circulating on social media that an elevator had collapsed inside the shopping center. The ministry said the damage was caused by a gas cylinder explosion inside a ground-floor gift shop, which triggered a fire and damaged several nearby storefronts.
The Ministry of Health and Population dispatched eight ambulances to the scene to provide emergency assistance and transport the injured.
Of the 17 people injured, 11 were taken to New Cairo Specialized Hospital, while six others were transferred to nearby medical facilities for treatment and medical evaluation.
Authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion and began the necessary legal procedures to determine its cause and establish responsibility.
Emergency teams also worked to secure the affected area and assess the extent of the damage following the incident. (ILKHA)
