UK, Spain record hottest June temperatures on record
The United Kingdom and Spain have recorded their hottest June temperatures on record as a heatwave continues to affect large parts of Western Europe.
According to the BBC, temperatures in Surrey, England, reached 35.7 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous national June record of 35.6 degrees set in 1976.
Spain's national weather agency said the country's average temperature for June climbed to its highest level since records began in 1950.
The national average temperature reached 28.17 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, exceeding the previous June record of 28.01 degrees recorded on June 30, 2025.
Local temperatures in Spain also soared, with some areas reaching 40 degrees Celsius. In the northern region of Cantabria, temperatures climbed to 43.7 degrees Celsius.
The record-breaking temperatures come as an intense heatwave continues to impact much of Western Europe, raising concerns over public health and climate-related risks.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the heatwave poses a threat to people's lives and health, urging authorities to take stronger measures to address climate change.
Ghebreyesus also called on European governments to prioritize investment in climate-resilient health systems and intensify efforts to tackle the climate crisis. (ILKHA)
