UK to provide defense support to Belgium following suspicious drone activity
The United Kingdom has announced it will send military personnel and equipment to Belgium after a series of suspicious drone sightings disrupted operations at several airports and military bases across the country.
British Chief of Defence Staff Richard Knighton confirmed that the deployment comes in response to a formal request from Belgian authorities following multiple drone incursions detected over key sites, including airports serving Brussels and Liège.
“The Belgian side asked for assistance, and we will provide both personnel and technical equipment,” Knighton said, noting that neither country has yet identified the source of the drones. “We do not know who is behind these flights, but we are committed to helping our allies strengthen their defensive capacity.”
The recent incidents, which led to temporary airport closures and flight diversions, have raised security concerns across Europe. Similar drone activity was previously reported over military facilities in the Wallonia region, including the Elsenborn Military Training Camp and King Albert Barracks in Marche-en-Famenne.
In recent days, Germany and France also announced plans to provide Belgium with anti-drone support, following earlier security alerts in Poland, Romania, Estonia, and Denmark.
While some Western officials have hinted at possible links to hybrid operations attributed to Russia, Moscow has denied any involvement.
Belgium, home to key European Union and NATO institutions, has been on heightened alert since early October after multiple unidentified drones were sighted over strategic areas.(ILKHA)
