UN Chief: Gaza truce holding despite repeated violations
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday described the ceasefire in Gaza as “fragile” and “repeatedly violated,” urging all parties to uphold it and use the truce as a foundation for renewed peace talks and the realization of Palestinian self-determination.
“The ceasefire in Gaza is fragile, is repeatedly violated, but it is holding,” Guterres said at a news conference at UN headquarters in New York. “I strongly appeal for the ceasefire to be fully respected and to pave the way for the negotiations of phase two, leading to the creation of the conditions for the self-determination of the Palestinian people and the creation of the two-state solution.”
Despite ongoing challenges, Guterres said humanitarian operations in Gaza are expanding. “We are indeed, at the present moment, substantially increasing our humanitarian aid in Gaza, even though some obstacles and difficulties remain,” he added.
The UN chief noted that the organization’s next steps in Gaza would be determined by the Security Council. (ILKHA)
