UN report: Tens of thousands in Gaza suffer hearing loss from Israeli airstrikes
The United Nations has warned that tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are now living with hearing impairments caused by the intense and repeated explosions from Israeli military operations since October 2023.
In a report released on Saturday to mark the International Day of Deafblindness, observed annually on June 27, the UN highlighted the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict on persons with disabilities, warning that they face heightened risks amid the humanitarian crisis engulfing the besieged enclave.
According to the report, many Palestinians with disabilities have lost essential assistive devices during the war, including wheelchairs, hearing aids, and other equipment necessary for daily life. The destruction of infrastructure and repeated displacement have further limited access to support services, leaving vulnerable individuals increasingly isolated.
The United Nations noted that the war has significantly deepened the hardships faced by people with disabilities. Many are unable to hear evacuation warnings issued during military operations, while others struggle to navigate damaged streets and displacement sites due to visual impairments or mobility limitations.
The report stressed that these challenges place disabled individuals at particularly high risk as conflict zones and displacement areas continue to shift rapidly across the Gaza Strip. Without adequate assistance, many are unable to reach safer locations or access humanitarian aid.
The UN also highlighted the broader humanitarian conditions affecting Gaza's population, stating that most residents continue to endure insecurity, repeated displacement, and severe restrictions on access to basic services. Overcrowded shelters, damaged buildings, and temporary encampments often lack sufficient water, sanitation, healthcare, and protection services.
For persons with disabilities, these conditions create additional barriers and dangers, making everyday survival increasingly difficult. The organization warned that the ongoing crisis threatens to leave long-term physical and psychological consequences for thousands of vulnerable Palestinians.
The report renewed calls for greater protection of civilians, improved humanitarian access, and targeted support for persons with disabilities, emphasizing the urgent need to ensure that the most vulnerable members of Gaza's population are not left behind amid the continuing conflict. (ILKHA)
