UNHCR reaffirms commitment to Afghan returnees following Doha meeting
Afghanistan's Ambassador to Qatar, Mohammad Suhail Shaheen, held high-level talks with representatives of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Doha to discuss expanding humanitarian assistance and long-term support for Afghan refugees returning to their homeland.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed ways to improve access to essential services, including shelter, healthcare, education, and sustainable livelihood opportunities for returnees as Afghanistan continues to receive thousands of returning refugees.
Ambassador Shaheen stressed the importance of coordinated international efforts to ensure the safe and dignified reintegration of returnees into Afghan society. He also called for urgent measures to address the issue of unlawful seizures of refugees' assets and property, emphasizing the need to protect their rights and facilitate a stable return.
The discussions also focused on strengthening cooperation between Afghan authorities and international humanitarian organizations to respond effectively to the growing needs of returning families.
For its part, UNHCR reaffirmed its commitment to working with Afghan officials and international partners to identify practical and sustainable solutions for refugees and returnees, while continuing to support humanitarian and reintegration initiatives.
The meeting underscored the importance of continued international engagement in addressing the humanitarian and socioeconomic challenges facing returning Afghans and ensuring they receive the assistance needed to rebuild their lives. (ILKHA)
