US approves possible $4.5 billion aerial refueling aircraft sale to Qatar
The U.S. State Department has approved a possible $4.5 billion Foreign Military Sale to Qatar that includes four Boeing KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling aircraft and related equipment, following notification to Congress.
Under the proposed package, Qatar would receive four KC-46A tanker aircraft, eight Pratt & Whitney PW4062 turbofan engines, radar warning receivers, laser transmitter assemblies, communications equipment, training, logistics support and other associated systems.
Support for regional security
The U.S. government said the proposed sale would strengthen the security of a key regional partner and enhance Qatar's ability to conduct aerial refueling, air mobility and long-range operations.
According to the State Department, the package supports U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by improving the defense capabilities of a close partner while not altering the basic military balance in the region.
Congress notified
As required under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales process, the State Department has formally notified Congress of the proposed transaction. Congressional notification does not mean a final contract has been signed, and the value and scope of the sale may change during subsequent negotiations.
