The United States is reportedly holding diplomatic talks with Denmark regarding plans to expand its military presence in Greenland by establishing new bases on the strategically important Arctic island.

According to reports citing sources familiar with the discussions, Washington has made progress in recent months in negotiations aimed at increasing its military footprint in Greenland amid growing geopolitical competition in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.

The US administration is said to be evaluating the establishment of three new military facilities in southern Greenland, a move viewed by analysts as part of broader efforts to strengthen American influence in the Arctic following rising tensions involving Russia and China.

The White House reportedly confirmed that contacts with Danish and Greenlandic officials are continuing and expressed satisfaction with the current course of discussions.

The planned facilities are expected to focus on monitoring military and maritime activities across the North Atlantic, particularly around the strategically vital GIUK Gap — the naval corridor between Greenland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom long considered critical for NATO defense strategy.

Reports indicated that one of the most sensitive issues in the negotiations involves proposals to grant the new facilities a form of limited US-controlled military jurisdiction.

The Narsarsuaq area, previously used as a military airfield, is reportedly among the leading candidates for future expansion due to its existing airport and port infrastructure, which experts say could significantly reduce operational costs.

Although former US President Donald Trump previously drew international attention with controversial remarks about Greenland, current negotiations are reportedly being conducted through quieter diplomatic and military channels coordinated by the US State Department.

Denmark confirmed ongoing diplomatic contacts with Washington but declined to provide details, while maintaining a cautious approach toward American military expansion requests in the region.

During the Cold War, the United States operated several military facilities across Greenland. Today, the US maintains the active Pituffik Space Base on the island, while the newly proposed sites are believed to be aimed at expanding maritime defense capabilities and strengthening military operations in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.
