Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 6,438
The death toll from twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June has risen to 6,438, according to the latest official figures released on August 17.
Nearly two months after the disaster, rescue teams and relatives of those still missing continue searching through the rubble in hopes of finding survivors or recovering the remains of victims.
The latest death toll was announced by Parliament Speaker Jorge Rodriguez, who said the number of fatalities had increased from the previously reported figure of 6,301 released last week.
The updated figures highlight the continuing scale of the disaster as recovery and search operations remain underway in areas affected by the powerful earthquakes.
Authorities and emergency teams have continued efforts to locate missing people and assess the damage caused by the June seismic events.
With the search operations ongoing, officials have warned that the death toll could be revised further as rescue teams gain access to damaged and collapsed structures. (ILKHA)
