Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to meet in New York during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, describing the planned talks as a potential opportunity to advance diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Following a phone conversation with Trump, Zelenskyy said in a post on X that the meeting could have a significant impact on the course of events.
"This meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum," Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy said he and Trump discussed the recent visit of U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Ukraine, where they held talks on efforts to move the peace process forward.
He stressed that achieving peace remains Kyiv's top priority and said Ukraine is ready to continue working with the U.S. team to take "really serious steps" toward a solution.
According to Zelenskyy, the two leaders exchanged views on measures to reduce tensions and address key security issues, including the protection of human life, energy security and food security.
Trump and Zelenskyy are expected to meet in New York as world leaders gather for the 81st UN General Assembly, where international security issues, ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises are among the main topics on the agenda.
The planned talks come as Washington continues diplomatic efforts related to the Russia-Ukraine war. Zelenskyy also thanked Trump for recent U.S. steps, including actions aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow.
The Ukrainian president said Kyiv remains committed to cooperation with the United States and to pursuing diplomatic efforts that could help bring an end to the conflict.(ILKHA)
