Afghan embassy in Ankara commemorates fifth anniversary of Victory Day
The Afghan Embassy in Ankara hosted a special event on August 17, 2026, to commemorate the fifth anniversary of what Afghan authorities describe as the end of foreign occupation and the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan.
The event focused on the significance of August 15, 2021, which is observed by the Taliban administration as “Victory Day” following the withdrawal of U.S.-led foreign forces and the collapse of the previous Afghan government.
Embassy officials and attendees gathered in Ankara to mark the anniversary with speeches and discussions highlighting Afghanistan’s political and security developments since 2021.
The event also placed emphasis on Afghanistan’s relations with Türkiye, with speakers underlining the importance of strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation in areas including security and regional stability.
The commemoration comes as the Taliban authorities seek greater diplomatic engagement with regional and international governments, while Afghanistan continues to face significant political, economic and humanitarian challenges.
Türkiye has maintained diplomatic contacts with Afghanistan and has continued to engage with the authorities in Kabul on issues including humanitarian assistance, trade, security and regional cooperation.
The Ankara gathering provided an opportunity for Afghan representatives and guests to reflect on the events of August 2021 and discuss Afghanistan’s future relations with Türkiye and other countries in the region. (ILKHA)
