Erdoğan, Polish President Nawrocki vow to deepen ties in defense, trade, and infrastructure during Ankara talks
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday hosted Polish President Karol Nawrocki for an official visit, highlighting the strong bilateral partnership between the two NATO allies and outlining ambitious areas for future cooperation.
Following an official welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Complex, the two leaders held bilateral discussions and a joint press conference, where Erdoğan emphasized opportunities in transportation, defense, education, culture, science, and tourism.
"Transportation constitutes another area of potential cooperation with Poland. The Three Seas Initiative, with which we are a strategic partner and which is also supported by Poland, provides an important platform in this regard," Erdoğan stated. Türkiye was granted strategic partner status in the Three Seas Initiative in 2025, aligning with efforts to enhance connectivity in Central and Eastern Europe.
The defense industry emerged as a key pillar of their partnership. Erdoğan noted significant past collaborations, particularly in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other projects, and expressed commitment to further strengthening these as fellow NATO members. Reports from the visit indicate the leaders also discussed a visit to Turkish defense firm Aselsan as part of ongoing military-industrial ties.
The presidents reviewed broader bilateral relations, setting a new target of $15 billion in trade volume, and discussed regional issues including the Russia-Ukraine war.
EU and NATO Priorities Erdoğan thanked Poland for its consistent support of Türkiye’s European Union accession process and voiced hope for continued backing. "We have the will to advance our cooperation with the European Union on the basis of mutual benefit and respect," he said.
The leaders also addressed NATO matters ahead of the Alliance’s summit in Ankara on July 7-8. Erdoğan stressed shared goals of bolstering the European pillar of NATO, enhancing deterrence, and promoting greater responsibility-sharing by European allies while strengthening the transatlantic bond. Security preparations in the Turkish capital are intensifying in the lead-up to the high-profile event.
Long-Standing Friendship Erdoğan described the discussions as a joint investment in the future of Turkish-Polish friendship, spanning education, culture, science, and tourism. Nawrocki’s two-day visit (June 23-24) underscores the strategic importance both nations place on their partnership amid evolving regional and global dynamics.
Analysts view the meeting as a timely opportunity to advance practical cooperation in defense exports, infrastructure connectivity via the Three Seas framework, and mutual support within NATO and EU contexts.
The visit comes as Türkiye prepares to host NATO leaders, positioning Ankara as a key player in Alliance deliberations. Both sides are expected to follow up with concrete steps to realize the outlined cooperation goals in the coming months. (ILKHA)
