Nemrut Caldera officially declared national park in eastern Türkiye
The spectacular Nemrut Caldera in Bitlis province, one of eastern Türkiye’s most remarkable volcanic landscapes, has officially been designated as the Nemrut Caldera National Park, strengthening efforts to protect the region’s unique geological features, lakes, vegetation and wildlife.
The designation places the vast volcanic caldera encompassing parts of Tatvan, Ahlat and Güroymak districts under national park status. The area is located west of Lake Van and is considered one of the region’s most important natural attractions.
A volcanic landscape shaped by nature
Nemrut Caldera was formed by volcanic activity and contains a remarkable collection of natural features within its enormous crater. The caldera is particularly notable for its crater lakes, which create a striking landscape at high altitude.
The area contains five lakes, with Lake Nemrut and the warmer Lake Ilı among its best-known bodies of water. Lake Nemrut is renowned for its clear, turquoise-colored waters, while Lake Ilı is distinguished by its relatively warm temperature, providing a striking contrast within the volcanic landscape.
The combination of volcanic formations, crater lakes and mountainous terrain has made Nemrut Caldera an increasingly popular destination for nature enthusiasts, photographers, hikers and visitors seeking to explore eastern Türkiye’s natural heritage.
A distinctive high-altitude ecosystem
Despite its elevation and the harsh climatic conditions typical of eastern Anatolia, the interior of the caldera has developed a distinctive microclimate.
This unusual environment supports a variety of plant species and deciduous trees that are not commonly found at comparable elevations elsewhere in the region. The sheltered conditions created by the caldera contribute to the area's ecological diversity and make it an important natural habitat.
The protected landscape also provides shelter for numerous wildlife species. Foxes, hares and bears are among the animals reported in the wider Nemrut Caldera ecosystem, highlighting the importance of preserving the area from uncontrolled development and environmental degradation.
Boost for nature tourism
The national park designation is expected to further increase Nemrut Caldera’s profile as a destination for ecotourism and outdoor recreation in eastern Türkiye.
Its proximity to Lake Van and the historic and cultural attractions of Bitlis province gives the newly designated national park potential to become an important component of the region's tourism economy.
Officials and environmental advocates have emphasized the importance of balancing tourism development with conservation. Increased visitor numbers could provide economic opportunities for surrounding communities, while national park status can provide a stronger framework for protecting the caldera’s fragile ecosystem.
Protecting a natural heritage site
The designation of Nemrut Caldera as a national park comes as Türkiye continues efforts to preserve areas of exceptional geological and ecological importance.
With its volcanic formations, five crater lakes, distinctive vegetation and diverse wildlife, Nemrut Caldera represents a rare combination of geological and biological features.
The new status is expected to reinforce conservation efforts while allowing visitors to experience one of eastern Anatolia’s most spectacular natural landscapes under a more structured and sustainable tourism framework. (ILKHA)
