Türkiye and Niger sign agreement to boost disaster response cooperation

Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and Niger's Ministry of Population, Social Action and National Solidarity have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in disaster and emergency management.
The agreement was signed by AFAD President Ali Hamza Pehlivan and Nigerien Minister of Population, Social Action and National Solidarity Prof. Sidikou Ramatou Djermakoye Seyni.
Cooperation in disaster and emergency response
Under the memorandum, the two countries will cooperate in responding to crises and emergencies upon request, with the aim of improving coordination and mutual assistance during disaster situations.
The agreement also provides for the exchange of knowledge, expertise and best practices in disaster and emergency management, as well as expert exchanges and technical working visits to enhance institutional capacity.
Training and capacity building
The memorandum further envisages organizing joint training programmes focusing on disaster preparedness, prevention, risk reduction and emergency response to strengthen the capabilities of both countries.
The two sides also aim to promote closer cooperation through the development of technical partnerships and the sharing of experience in disaster management.
The agreement is expected to further deepen relations between Türkiye and Niger while enhancing their ability to respond effectively to natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies.
AFAD has expanded its international cooperation in disaster management in recent years by sharing Türkiye's expertise in disaster preparedness, search and rescue, humanitarian relief and post-disaster recovery with partner countries through bilateral agreements, training programmes and joint exercises.
Niger, one of the countries in Africa's Sahel region, is frequently affected by floods, droughts and humanitarian crises, underscoring the importance of strengthening disaster preparedness and emergency response capacities through international cooperation. (ILKHA)
