Türkiye has officially launched its national Emissions Trading System (TR ETS), with the regulation governing the scheme published in the Official Gazette, Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum announced.

The regulation, consisting of 42 articles, six provisional articles and seven annexes, establishes the legal framework for implementing the Türkiye Emissions Trading System and creates the country's carbon market infrastructure.

The new framework also clarifies rules to support compliance with both national climate obligations and international requirements, including the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

The TR ETS is designed to encourage greenhouse gas emissions reductions, accelerate the adoption of low-carbon production technologies and support Türkiye's green transition.

The government also plans to expand monitoring, reporting and verification processes in line with the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

The new system is expected to accelerate the country's green development goals while promoting green employment opportunities.

Officials said the regulation will help preserve Türkiye's competitiveness in international trade and support the country's objective of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2053.(ILKHA)
