Egypt deploys chinese-made HQ-9B Air Defense Systems in Sinai

Egypt has deployed Chinese-made HQ-9B long-range air defense systems in the Sinai Peninsula, a move seen as a demonstration of readiness against potential threats following Israel’s recent strike on Qatar.
Israeli media outlets reacted critically to the deployment, claiming that Egypt had seriously violated the peace treaty between the two countries. Analysts in Israel noted that the timing — coinciding with Israel’s airstrike targeting a Hamas delegation in Qatar — underscored Cairo’s intention to neutralize potential threats within its borders without being drawn into direct conflict.Observers suggested that by positioning the HQ-9B systems, Egypt aimed to bolster its border security and display its level of coordination and preparedness to respond to scenarios similar to the one in Qatar.
The HQ-9B, developed by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), gained international attention during the recent conflict between Pakistan and India. Designed to intercept fighter jets, cruise missiles, and short-range ballistic missiles, the system has an operational range of 200 kilometers and can engage targets at altitudes of up to 27 kilometers. Its radar employs active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology, enabling the detection of low-observable targets.
Each launcher can carry up to eight missiles, while the command-and-control infrastructure allows integration with other defense assets. Its mobility enables the radar and command units to relocate quickly, reducing vulnerability to counterattacks.
Apart from Egypt, the HQ-9B is also in service with countries such as Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan.(ILKHA)
