Chinese researchers develop lithium battery capable of withstanding temperatures up to 300°C
Chinese researchers have developed a ceramic-based lithium-ion microbattery capable of operating under extreme temperatures, a breakthrough that could expand the use of energy storage systems in harsh environments.
Scientists at Tsinghua University said the newly developed battery can operate stably at temperatures of up to 150 degrees Celsius and withstand short-term thermal shocks reaching 300 degrees Celsius without significant performance degradation.
Designed for extreme conditions
According to a study published in the scientific journal Matter, the battery was developed to address safety concerns associated with conventional lithium-ion batteries, which contain liquid electrolytes and can face leakage, overheating and fire risks when exposed to high temperatures.
Researchers noted that these limitations have restricted the use of current battery technologies in applications such as fire alarm systems, industrial Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, aerospace equipment and defense technologies.
Fully ceramic structure improves safety
To overcome these challenges, the team designed a multilayer microbattery composed entirely of ceramic materials. The strengthened interfaces between the layers were found to improve performance while allowing the technology to be scaled for different applications.
The study highlighted that the battery is completely nonflammable and can maintain its structural integrity even when exposed to prolonged direct flames. Researchers also reported that the device demonstrated high thermal stability in open-air conditions.
Potential applications in aerospace and wearable technologies
The research team said the technology could eventually be used in wearable sensors, IoT devices, aerospace electronics and other systems that operate in high-temperature environments.
Experts described the development as a significant step forward for solid-state battery technologies, particularly in terms of safety, durability and reliability under extreme operating conditions.(ILKHA)
