At least 12 killed, 11 injured in Afghanistan flood disaster
At least 12 people have been killed and 11 others injured after heavy rainfall and snowfall triggered severe flash floods across several provinces in Afghanistan over the past three days, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Thursday.
According to an NDMA spokesperson, the sudden floods swept through residential areas, farmland, and key transport routes, causing widespread destruction to homes and infrastructure. Several victims were reported to have been trapped by rapidly rising waters, while others were injured as houses collapsed or vehicles were swept away.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected areas to assist with rescue operations and assess the extent of the damage. Local authorities said dozens of families have been displaced, with many seeking temporary shelter as floodwaters continue to threaten low-lying مناطق. امداد agencies are providing food, blankets, and basic medical assistance to those impacted.
Officials noted that ongoing bad weather has hampered rescue and relief efforts in some remote districts, particularly in mountainous regions where snowfall has blocked roads and limited access. Preliminary assessments indicate that agricultural losses could be significant, as floods damaged crops and livestock at a critical time for rural communities.
The NDMA warned that further rainfall and melting snow could worsen the situation in the coming days and urged residents in vulnerable areas to take precautions and move to safer ground where possible. Authorities said casualty figures may rise as damage assessments continue and teams reach previously inaccessible areas.
Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events, and flash floods frequently cause loss of life and livelihoods, particularly in areas with weak infrastructure and limited early-warning systems. (ILKHA)
