Belgium issues nationwide orange alert as intense European heatwave spreads
Belgium has joined a growing list of European countries placed on high alert as an intense and prolonged heatwave continues to grip much of the continent, pushing temperatures to dangerous levels across western and southern Europe.
The Belgian Royal Meteorological Institute announced that an orange heat warning will be in effect nationwide as maximum temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 35°C in most regions starting Wednesday. Officials warned that the heatwave is likely to intensify in the coming days, increasing health risks and putting pressure on public services.
Widespread Alerts Across Europe
The escalating heatwave has triggered coordinated warnings across multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Spain, as authorities prepare for potentially record-breaking temperatures.
In the United Kingdom, health officials issued a rare red heat health alert for Wednesday and Thursday, signaling severe risk to public health. Meteorologists from the UK Met Office forecast temperatures reaching up to 38°C in parts of southern England, with London experiencing some of its highest early-summer temperatures in years.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres commented on the extreme conditions during London Climate Action Week, noting that “London is cooking,” underscoring growing international concern over climate-related heat extremes.
The UK’s current alert is only the second of its kind, following the unprecedented heatwave of July 2022, when temperatures in the country exceeded 40°C for the first time on record.
Disruptions Across France, Italy, and Spain
France, Italy, and Spain are also experiencing severe impacts from the ongoing heatwave, with authorities issuing emergency-level warnings for millions of residents.
France recorded what meteorological services described as its hottest day ever for late June, prompting temporary closures and restrictions at major landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum, while schools and transport systems faced widespread disruption.
In Italy, the Health Ministry issued red alerts for 16 cities, including Rome, Milan, Florence, and Turin. Temperatures in some areas are expected to reach 41°C, particularly in Florence, while other major cities are forecast to remain in the mid-to-high 30s. The “bollino rosso” alert level indicates conditions that pose serious health risks not only for vulnerable groups but also for healthy adults.
Spain has also activated red weather alerts in several provinces, particularly in the north, where temperatures are approaching 40°C, marking the center of the current heatwave activity.
Transport and Infrastructure Affected
The extreme weather has begun to disrupt transportation networks across Europe. Eurostar confirmed the cancellation of multiple train services between London and Paris due to adverse weather conditions linked to extreme heat, citing operational safety concerns.
Meteorologists warn that prolonged heat can also affect rail infrastructure, road surfaces, and energy grids as demand for cooling systems rises sharply.
Health Risks and Scientific Context
Public health agencies across Europe have reiterated warnings about the dangers of prolonged exposure to extreme heat. Medical experts emphasize that high temperatures can impair the body’s ability to regulate internal heat, significantly increasing the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke.
According to climate scientists, the intensity and frequency of such heatwaves are consistent with broader long-term warming trends affecting Europe. Recent assessments by European climate monitoring systems have repeatedly highlighted that heatwaves are becoming more frequent, more intense, and longer-lasting, with southern and western Europe among the most affected regions.
Meteorological experts also point to atmospheric conditions such as persistent high-pressure systems and “heat domes” that trap warm air over large areas, further amplifying temperatures.
Authorities Urge Caution as Heatwave Continues
As the heatwave persists, authorities across affected countries are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on elderly or vulnerable individuals.
Forecasts suggest that extreme temperatures may continue across parts of Europe into the weekend, with only limited relief expected in some northern regions.
With multiple countries now under high-level heat warnings, the ongoing heatwave underscores growing concerns about extreme weather patterns and their expanding impact on daily life across Europe. (ILKHA)
