Berlin warns Washington against interfering in German elections
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned the Trump administration against interfering in Germany's electoral process after the U.S. State Department announced a funding initiative aimed at supporting MAGA-aligned causes across Europe.
Speaking at the federal government's annual summer press conference, Merz was asked about a reported US program that allegedly supports political and civil society groups across Europe.
The program has drawn criticism from some quarters over concerns that it could indirectly benefit political movements such as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Merz said Germany has always avoided involvement in US elections and expects the American government and organizations linked to it to show the same respect for Germany's democratic process.
He also noted that foreign financing of German political parties is prohibited under German law, adding that all countries are expected to respect Germany's legal framework governing elections and political activity.
State elections approaching
Germany is scheduled to hold state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in September.
Recent opinion polls indicate that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is leading in both Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ahead of the vote.
Warning over the far right
Merz also warned that the prospect of a far-right party coming to power in Germany carries particular significance because of the country's historical experience.
He said his government would continue working to prevent such an outcome, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Germany's democratic institutions and constitutional order. (ILKHA)
