The death toll from severe flooding triggered by heavy monsoon rains in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state has risen to 81, while 62 others have been injured.

According to local media, torrential rains that have battered the state for the past three days caused widespread flooding and extensive damage across several districts.

The Times of India, citing Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod, reported that the death toll climbed to 81 after 25 additional fatalities were recorded on September 27, following 56 deaths reported on September 25 and 26.

Authorities have been instructed to continue relief and rescue operations in the affected areas, according to India's public broadcaster All India Radio (AIR).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast thunderstorms and further rainfall across many parts of eastern and western Uttar Pradesh on Monday, warning that adverse weather conditions could persist.

AIR also reported that schools and colleges in several districts, including Amroha, Shravasti, Pilibhit and Bijnor, were closed because of the severe weather.

Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel and follow official safety advisories as emergency teams continue response operations.(ILKHA)
