At least 111 people were killed and 87 others injured after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday.

The earthquake was centered near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region. Colombia's Geological Service revised the magnitude to 7.4, while the U.S. Geological Survey placed the depth at around 107 kilometers.

President Abelardo de la Espriella said in a national address that 1,575 homes and other buildings had been damaged. Thirty-seven buildings were completely destroyed, while 61 others partially collapsed.

Rescue teams have been deployed to affected areas as emergency operations continue. Several people remain trapped under rubble, while authorities are assessing the extent of the damage in cities and communities across the region.

The earthquake was felt in several parts of Colombia, including areas far from the epicenter. Reports of structural damage and injuries have emerged from multiple locations.

Emergency response expands

The government has mobilized emergency resources to assist affected communities and search for people who may still be trapped.

The latest casualty figures remain subject to change as rescue teams reach damaged areas and authorities continue their assessment.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre had initially reported the earthquake at magnitude 6.8 before the magnitude was revised. (ILKHA)
