Drone attack on Colombian military base kills five soldiers, injures 33
At least five soldiers were killed and 33 others injured in a drone attack targeting a military base in Colombia's southern Bolívar Department, according to local reports.
The attack took place at a military base in the municipality of Santa Rosa del Sur, where explosive-laden drones targeted military facilities, causing casualties among soldiers stationed at the site.
Local media reported that eight of the injured soldiers were in serious condition following the attack.
Military facilities heavily damaged in drone attack
The First Division of the Colombian Army said in a statement that the attack was carried out using explosive-laden drones and described the incident as a violation of international humanitarian law and fundamental human rights.
The army stated that the drones targeted military infrastructure, soldiers' accommodation areas and administrative buildings at the base.
The attack caused significant damage, including collapsed roofs and severe destruction to several structures within the facility.
The army announced that air-supported operations had been launched in the area to locate and capture those responsible for the attack.
No group claims responsibility as investigation continues
No armed organization has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, and Colombian security authorities have not released an official statement identifying the perpetrators.
Authorities continue investigating the attack while security operations remain underway in the region.
The incident comes amid increased military operations against illegal armed groups in Colombia.
President Abelardo de la Espriella said on 4 November that authorities should identify, capture or neutralize the leaders of illegal armed organizations, particularly members of the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
The government had previously ended peace negotiations with three illegal armed groups, including the ELN and the Joint General Staff of Blocs and Fronts (EMBF), on 28 August, citing a lack of sufficient commitment to the peace process.(ILKHA)
