Five people killed, multiple injured after shooting in Polish city of Krakow
At least five people have been killed and more than a dozen others injured in a shooting in the historic Main Market Square in Krakow, Poland, on Saturday, according to police.
The shooting occurred at around 3 p.m. local time when a man drove into the city's Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) and opened fire on random people from his vehicle, Polish police said.
The suspect was subsequently confronted by police officers, who shot and wounded him before taking him into custody. He was being transported to hospital, authorities said.
Among those injured were two police officers. Emergency services, including ambulances and a medical rescue helicopter, were dispatched to the scene, while police cordoned off the area and evacuated people from the square.
Further details emerging from the investigation indicated that the suspect was wearing military-style clothing and had used a military-type firearm. Police also reportedly discovered additional weapons and ammunition inside his vehicle.
In a separate incident linked to the shooting, a tram travelling through the city centre was reportedly targeted by gunfire, shattering the driver's cabin window. Neither the driver nor any passengers were injured.
Police said the suspect had acted alone and that there were no other suspects, adding that the immediate threat to the public had been contained. However, authorities have not yet announced a possible motive for the shooting.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as tragic, saying he was being kept informed by the interior minister as police investigated the background and circumstances of the attack.
Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek also called for calm, while prosecutors and emergency services continued securing evidence at the scene.
The historic Main Market Square, one of Europe's largest medieval town squares, is a major tourist destination in Krakow, Poland's second-largest city.
The investigation into the deadly shooting is ongoing. (ILKHA)
