Flights temporarily halted at Brussels Airport amid suspected drone activity
Flights at Brussels Airport were briefly suspended on Wednesday night after air traffic controllers detected what was believed to be a drone near the airport premises.
Belgian air traffic authority Skeyes confirmed that operations were halted as a precautionary measure following the sighting of an unidentified aerial object. Flights resumed later in the evening after officials declared the airspace safe.
Authorities have yet to confirm the nature or origin of the object.
The incident comes amid growing concern in Belgium over suspicious drone movements near sensitive military and energy facilities. Earlier in November, multiple drone activities were reported over Kleine Brogel Air Base, a site used by NATO and Belgian forces, as well as near Doel Nuclear Power Plant and Liège Airport.
In recent weeks, drones have also been spotted over Elsenborn Military Training Camp and King Albert Military Base in the Walloon region. Each event prompted temporary airspace restrictions while investigations were launched.
Belgian defense officials have acknowledged the increasing frequency of drone-related incidents across the country, warning that such activity may pose a national and regional security risk.
The European Union and NATO have not yet commented on the latest incident at Brussels Airport.(ILKHA)
