Four Canadian soldiers killed in fire at Alberta military base
Four Canadian Armed Forces members were killed and dozens injured in a fire at a training area at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, Prime Minister Mark Carney said.
Carney said the next of kin of the four service members had been notified. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said on Sunday that 39 patients were in hospital, at least 19 of them in critical condition.
The four dead were identified as Pte. Aidan Goulding, Pte. Shaun Farrell, Pte. Hayden Lykkemark and Sgt. Morgan Wong.
Earlier reports citing sources confirmed that seven people had died, but defence officials confirmed four fatalities.
The Department of National Defence said that there were no indications that the incident, which occurred on Saturday, was linked to terrorist activity.
Officials have not confirmed the cause of the fire.
Political leaders across Canada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged support for those affected. (ILKHA)
