Hamas accuses Mladenov of fueling tensions as Gaza ceasefire faces collapse risks
The Hamas Movement has accused Nikolay Mladenov, executive director of the Peace Council, of contributing to the worsening humanitarian and political crisis in the Gaza Strip, urging him to halt what it described as incitement against Gaza and the movement and to adhere to the agreed framework aimed at ending the war.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the movement is engaged in intensive diplomatic contacts and ongoing discussions with relevant parties in an effort to contain escalating tensions and stop what he described as the “dangerous aggression” against civilians in the Gaza Strip.
Qassem stated that Hamas is working across multiple channels to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, particularly the fulfillment of obligations under its first phase. He warned that continued failure to respect these commitments is exacerbating instability and prolonging the suffering of the population in Gaza.
He directly accused Mladenov of playing a negative role in the diplomatic process, alleging that he delivered “misleading briefings” in United Nations Security Council sessions and engaged in rhetoric against Gaza and Hamas in various international meetings.
Qassem called on the international official to commit to the existing plan intended to end the war, warning that introducing new conditions or complications would, in Hamas’s view, give further cover for continued Israeli military escalation.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are continuing in the region. Egypt has invited a Hamas negotiating delegation, led by Khalil al-Hayya, to Cairo for further discussions aimed at advancing negotiations toward the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.
According to an Egyptian source familiar with mediation efforts, intensive contacts are underway to organize talks before the end of the week in an attempt to preserve the agreement amid renewed Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip.
The developments come after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he had instructed the military to take control of 70 percent of the Gaza Strip, a move that contradicts previously announced peace proposals by U.S. President Donald Trump.
At the same time, Israeli forces have continued to violate the ceasefire agreement since it came into effect on October 10, 2025. According to Gaza health authorities, these violations have resulted in 930 Palestinians killed and 2,819 wounded.
Overall, since October 2023, the death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 72,939, with 172,927 people reported injured, as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate under ongoing military pressure in the territory. (ILKHA)
