Japan has raised the volcanic alert level for Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture from Level 2 to Level 3 following a sharp increase in volcanic tremors and gas emissions, prompting authorities to restrict access to the volcano.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued the Level 3 alert through its Fukuoka Regional Headquarters on Friday afternoon, warning the public not to enter the mountain area due to an elevated risk of eruption.

According to the JMA, the amplitude of volcanic tremors began increasing around 7 p.m. local time on Wednesday. A field survey conducted on Friday also confirmed a significant rise in volcanic gas emissions, indicating that volcanic activity has intensified.

The agency warned that people should stay away from the area within a 2-kilometer radius of Nakadake Crater No. 1, where an eruption could eject large volcanic rocks and generate pyroclastic flows.

First Level 3 alert since 2022

Mount Aso's volcanic alert level was raised from Level 1 to Level 2 in June following signs of increased activity. Friday's decision marks the first time since February 2022 that the volcano has been placed under a Level 3 alert.

The JMA said it has found no clear evidence that the recent strong earthquake in Kumamoto directly triggered the increase in volcanic activity, but added that it will continue to closely monitor the volcano.(ILKHA)
